Rift is an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game), the action of which takes place in a fantasy world, named Telara.

Telara has become a point at which worlds from other dimensions (planes) intersect. Due to the actions taken by the death god Regulos, planes from other dimensions invade the world of Telara from time to time, making rifts open.

There are two factions in the game who oppose Regulos - the Guardians and the Defiants. Though they not only oppose the god of death, but conflict with each other, which is another cause of tension in the game, and is another part of gameplay and the plot.

Characters have the role of Ascended - they are resurrected beings and their main task is to destroy the hordes of Regulos and eliminate this threat from the world of Telare for good.

Regarding the two factions, the Guardians are the ones who honor the Vigil - the god of Telara. This factions includes the following races: the High Elves, dwarves, and the Mathosians (a humanoid race). The ascended of the Guardians were resurrected by their god Vigil after being killed at the time of an earlier conflict with Regulos. Players who choose Guardian fight and die against one of Regulos' commanders, only to be brought back at the beginning of Rift.

The Defiant are the second faction, who mainly believe and rely upon technology which is seen as the most appropriate way to defeat the forces of Regulos. The race of the Kelari (resembling dark elves), the Eth (humanoids), and the Bahmi (giant beings). The Ascended of the Defiant were resurrected after a battle with cataclysmic impact that devastated Telara. If you choose the faction of the Defiant, at the beginning of the game your character will be sent back in time to the period at which Rift began, also, you will be able to fight together with the Guardians.
